First an apology. I'm sorry I did not get this message out sooner, Mike
requested that I respond to some of your concerns but, I have been swamped
(as we all are).
Today
Many of your messages express concern over the direction Novell is taking
with NNS. Let me try to lessen those concerns. NNS was designed primarily
as a management tool to ease the administration of multiple servers (a
request by many NetWare users). NNS was developed as an extension of
existing technology (bindery) and was designed to provide as many
capabilities as possible while working with the large installed base of
NetWare v2.15, v2.2 and v3.11. NNS can not provide everything that you or I
would like to see in a name service - but it does provide many management
features (profiles, multi-server account creation/modification/deletion). I
have heard from many customers that NNS is not perfect (compromises never
are) but many of those same customers say that they can not live without
NNS until Novell's Directory Service is available. Some of the areas that
Novell is aware that need to be addressed are:
* Macintosh and OS/2 Support
* WAN Aware
* Able to handle large networks
* Global (not domain oriented)
* Greater Performance with Larger Number of Servers
* All Services Supported (More than just Users, Groups, and Print)
* Extensible (Ability to add new type of objects as well as new
attributes to objects)
* Less Memory Required
* Take advantage of new capabilities of the NetWare OS.
Novell is fully committed to addressing all of these areas. All will be
addressed in NetWare v3.2 which will have built in the Directory Service
technology I mentioned earlier (often referred to as NDS). Novell is also
fully committed to NNS - however, many of the issues above can not be
addressed in NNS due to the compromises required to have NNS work on
existing platforms. However, most bugs that Novell becomes aware of are
being fixed as soon as possible. If this was a perfect world - we would do
a lot more with NNS, but since Novell has only a limited amount of resources
- we have to focus on the areas which will benefit the largest number of
users. For this reason, most of the development effort is directed towards
the directory service technologies that will meet the needs of both large as
well as smaller networks. Until NDS is available, NNS (watch those
abbreviations) provides for many management/name service needs and can help
in preparing for the future (but is not a requirement)
Tomorrow
Novell is focusing on a number areas during the next year - with NDS being
one of the main ones. Some of the ares of focus are:
* Integrated Network Management
* Improved WAN performance
* International Language Support
* Image and Object Support
* Improved APIs as development tools across all supported clients and
server platforms
* (And yes) a Global, distributed directory service
Unfortunately, I can not go into more detail regarding these focus areas,
but I did want to give you an idea of where we are going. I hope this
message helps you understand where we are going with Name/Directory
Services. If you have any comments or areas that you want to see addressed,
please feel free to call me at 801-429-3247 or CIS mail #76247,2377
